About Guy

Guy Harkness Artist

I was born in Hamilton and spent the next 25 years or so moving around between Wellington, Fiji, Whanganui and London, before finally settling down in Auckland.

Like many kids growing up I loved to draw and paint and it became a habit I’ve hung on to. This was probably helped along by growing up surrounded by great art at home - a Don Binney landscape was my favourite.

Over the years I’ve gone on to discover and enjoy other local artists including Rita Angus, Robin White, Paul Dibble, Bill Hammond, Michael Smither and Colin McCahon.

My love of the creative process paved the way to the advertising and design world where I worked in client service and project management roles. As well as being inspired by some really talented creative colleagues

I kept chipping away at my own creative ventures in the background. I spent some time in art class, initially at Artstation in Ponsonby and more recently at the Matthew Browne Art School. Looking back I thank this period for introducing me to a growing family of favourite artists including Brett Whiteley, David Hockney, Peter Doig, Sidney Nolan, Philip Guston, Hilma af Clint, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiant, Andy Warhol, Paul Gauguin, Banksy and many more.

I paint because I love art and the painting process. I love what art can do to a space and a mood; the mixed reactions it receives; the feelings it evokes, the connections it makes. I’ve explored a number of subjects and styles and still do the occasional abstract, portrait or still life piece. However today my focus is largely on landscapes. I enjoy exploring new expressions of landscapes we all recognise and share. I try to present the rhythm and flow of the landscape with line, colour and form.

While I’m not currently represented by a gallery, you’ll find my paintings at exhibitions, art shows, my home studio and online. Over the last few years I’ve also been producing a line of fine art prints of my paintings, which are available online and through Endemic World in Auckland.

Thanks for supporting my work.
